Despite being relatively small compared to the neighbouring national parks, little Luambe Park offers a wide diversity of mammals, birds and reptiles.
The different landscapes are home to puku and other antelope such as waterbuck, bushbuck, impala, eland and kudu. In addition you will find elephant, buffalo, zebra, baboon, lion, hippo and crocodiles.
The endemic Cookson`s wildebeest can be spotted and if you are very lucky even wild dogs.
At night many nocturnal animals can be seen, including leopard, hyena, serval, porcupine, scrub hare, civet cat, honey badger and bush baby, just to mention a few.
Besides our morning and afternoon game drives in an open 4x4 vehicle, we offer individual night drives or guided game walks.
Bird watching is possible during game drives, walks, from a hyde or even in the close vicinity of the lodge.
The park has many woodland and riverine species, including the African Skimmer, weavers, ducks, cranes, hornbills, fishing owls, falcons, trogons and coloured palm thrushes, making this a bird lover’s paradise.
Birders may even have the luck of discovering an endemic species for the first time, such as the Angola pitta seen in Luambe in summer 2005.
During our night drives you may see a number of nocturnal species. Luambe is especially rich in wild cats including leopards, civet cats and servals.
Guided walking safaris are a truly unique experience for those who prefer to be as close as possible to the natural environment. Walking in the surrounding woodlands (under protection of a National Park Scouts guide) is a wonderland of sight and sounds, exploring the signs of the wild where nature allows a brief glimpse into her secrets. Our local guide is very professional in his knowledge and enjoys showing this beautiful park to the international visitors.
Those interested in trees will find also an abundant variety of indigenous species. A map of the camp which names the individual trees around is available. Signs posted next to the trees give their scientif and english names.
A visit to the local village outside the park or a local school can be arranged.
We work closely together with the local community where we assisted in setting up a bakery, a tailoring club, garden marketing and recently a carpentry project, which can be visited. We now buy as much as possible from the village thus securing them an additional income.
Alternatively, you can simply sit back on the banks of the river and soak up the sights and sounds of the bush, read a book, or delve into our reference library.
